An engine generates enormous heat, and its cooling system exists to carry that heat away and hold the engine in the narrow temperature band where it runs safely. How the cooling system works

The cooling system circulates coolant through passages in the engine, where it absorbs heat, and then through the radiator, where airflow carries that heat away, before returning it to the engine. A water pump drives the circulation, a thermostat regulates the flow to bring the engine up to temperature quickly and hold it there, and a cooling fan pulls air through the radiator when the car is stationary or moving slowly.

It is a system in balance, and a fault in any part upsets the whole. A stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, a blocked or leaking radiator, a perished hose or a fan that no longer runs can each let the engine overheat or, in the case of a thermostat stuck open, never reach proper temperature. Because the parts age together, a car of a certain age and mileage is approaching the point where cooling components start to need attention, which is exactly why they belong in an inspection.

Each cooling component has a characteristic way of failing, and knowing them focuses the inspection.

Water pump and thermostat

The water pump is driven by a belt - sometimes the timing belt - and its bearing and seal wear, so a failing pump can leak coolant, become noisy or, if it seizes, stop circulation and cause rapid overheating. Because it is often behind the timing belt, it is commonly replaced with it. The thermostat can stick shut, causing overheating, or stick open, leaving the engine slow to warm and running cool, which a temperature gauge or scan reveals.

Radiator, hoses and fan

The radiator can corrode internally, block up, or leak from its plastic end tanks, which are a common failure point. Hoses perish, swell and split with age and heat, and a coolant leak from a hose or connection is one of the more frequent cooling faults. The electric cooling fan should cut in when the engine gets hot, and a fan that no longer runs causes overheating in slow traffic even when the rest of the system is sound.

Reading the coolant and the leaks

It should be clean and at the correct level in the expansion tank; a low level points to a leak that must be found, while rusty or contaminated coolant suggests internal corrosion or that the wrong fluid has been used. Oily residue in the coolant, or coolant disappearing with no external leak, can indicate a head-gasket fault where coolant and oil are mixing internally - a far more serious matter.

External leaks leave their own evidence: staining, crusty deposits or damp around the radiator, hoses, pump and connections, and coolant on the ground where the car has been parked. A cooling system that has been repeatedly topped up, or an expansion tank filled well above its mark, tells you the owner has been chasing a leak. We look for these signs, because a small cooling leak ignored is exactly what leads to the overheating that damages engines.

How the engine manages its temperature under real conditions is the ultimate test of the cooling system, and it is why a proper road test matters. A healthy engine warms up to its normal operating temperature at a reasonable rate and holds it steadily, whether idling in traffic or working on the road. The temperature gauge, or the reading on a diagnostic scan, should settle and stay settled.

The warning signs are a temperature that climbs above normal, especially in slow traffic where the fan should be doing its work, or one that fluctuates in a way that suggests a sticking thermostat or an air-locked system. An engine that never reaches proper temperature points to a thermostat stuck open.
