Air-conditioning is the comfort system buyers most often forget to test and most regret ignoring. A system that blows cold for the two minutes of a viewing can still be failing, and the range of possible causes runs from a cheap refrigerant top-up to a compressor or condenser that costs many times more. Because the fault is invisible and the repair can be expensive, the climate system deserves a proper, measured check rather than a quick blast of cold air. Here is how an inspection assesses it, and what the results actually mean.

How a car's climate system works

Air-conditioning is a sealed refrigerant loop driven by a compressor on the engine. The compressor pressurises the refrigerant, a condenser at the front of the car sheds its heat, and an evaporator inside the dashboard absorbs heat from the cabin air, leaving it cold and dehumidified. A small amount of refrigerant escapes naturally over the years, so even a healthy system gradually loses performance.

Climate control adds electronic management, temperature sensors and flap motors that mix and direct the air to hold a set temperature. That extra complexity brings extra failure points: a system can be mechanically sound yet blow the wrong temperature because a blend-flap motor or sensor has failed. Knowing which part is at fault is the difference between a small bill and a large one.

The measured cold-air test

The first and most revealing test is simple: run the system at its coldest setting with the engine running and measure how cold the air from the vents becomes, and how quickly. A healthy system produces genuinely cold air within a minute or two; air that is merely cool, or that starts cold and warms up, points to low refrigerant, a weak compressor or a fault in the controls.

We also listen and feel for the compressor engaging and watch the engine's idle as it does.
