A pickup, or double-cab truck, is a different proposition from a car or even a van, because it is usually built on a separate ladder chassis, carries a four-wheel-drive system, and is bought precisely because it can tow, carry and go where cars cannot. That capability is the attraction, but it also means a used pickup has often been worked hard - towing heavy trailers, carrying loads in the bed, and sometimes driven off-road - and each of those uses leaves its own kind of wear. The four-wheel-drive system should engage and disengage cleanly, without excessive delay, grinding or warning lights, and the low-range gearing where fitted should select properly. The load bed and towing history

The load bed tells you how the pickup has been used. Deep gouges, dents, a heavily worn bed liner or corrosion where cargo has sat in water all point to genuine work, and while a pickup is built for this, severe damage can reach the bed floor and the mountings. A tidy, lightly used bed suggests a lifestyle buyer rather than a working owner, which usually means an easier life overall.

Towing is the other defining use. Suspension, brakes and the working-truck mechanicals

A pickup's suspension is built to carry weight, often with a stiff rear designed for a full load, and a truck used unladen for most of its life rides very differently from one worked at capacity. Sagging rear springs, worn dampers or signs of past overloading matter here as on a van.
